Purpose-Driven Optics for Deer Hunting

Two hunters, a man and woman, in a snowy landscape, preparing for a hunt.

When it comes to deer hunting, the right optic can make all the difference between a successful hunt and a day of frustration.  Sightmark, a trusted name in the optics industry, offers a range of products designed to enhance your hunting experience. What one may consider the "perfect" optic for deer hunting may be completely useless to another person hunting the same animal in a different part of the country.  Average shot distance, reticle type, weight, illumination, tube size, and more all come into play when comparing different optics.  Light transmission is essential across the board as deer are most active during first and last light.  Below, we’ll highlight several offerings from Sightmark and point out features they have that make them ideal for particular hunting scenarios you may find yourself in.

Wraith Mini 2-16x35 Thermal Rifle Scope

Wraith Mini 2-16x35 Thermal Rifle Scope

I personally use a thermal for getting to my treestand in the darkness of night, which has saved me on countless occasions from spooking the group of deer that I’ve nicknamed “The Breakfast Club", who I find every morning gathered below my stand. Eventually, they disperse, and shortly before first light, I'm typically able to monkey my way up into the stand.  From there, the 2-16x magnification range is perfect for my particular hunting spot as it is decently wooded, so I spend most of the hunt on the lower end of that spectrum, cranking it up if I need a good look up on the ridgeline.  With all that being said, the Wraith Mini has a 1,400-yard detection range, allowing me to get a sneak peek of the whitetail hopefully on its way to me.   The built-in camera is able to record audio and video allowing you to hopefully playback the shot you took that dropped that trophy buck.  If you use multiple rifles during deer season, you are able to save up to five profiles within this optic, making swapping back and forth a breeze.  This optic allows you to cut down on gear, and less weight is better especially if you have a lengthy hike to your preferred hunting spot.

Solitude 10x42 XD Binoculars

Sometimes your hunt will call upon you to do a fair amount of glassing.  Have you ever spent any length of time behind a set of binoculars only to walk away after a bit wondering why you have a headache?  Have you ever looked through glass and wondered why it looked hazy, or even milky?  Good glass is essential not only for the success of your hunt but for your comfort during it.  A fantastic tool to have in your arsenal is a quality pair of 10x42 binoculars, such as the Solitude 10x42 XD.  This size, in my opinion, strikes the perfect balance between size and magnification range.  The XD glass in this set keeps colors true while achieving high levels of light transmission and brightness to the viewer.  Having a wide field of view is key as well, allowing you to cover more ground in less time, with the Solitudes obtaining a 340-foot wide field of view at 1,000 yards (simply do the math to figure out your field of view at any given distance).   Investing in quality glass from the start will not only save you money but also keep you from throwing back Tylenol like they're skittles.

Solitude 20-60x60SE Spotting Scope Kit

Solitude 20-60x60SE Spotting Scope Kit

Perhaps you're not worried about weight and prefer a more hands-off approach to your glassing efforts.  I've seen many deer hunters in box blinds have a dedicated spotter that remained set up throughout deer season, and rightfully so.  Quality glass is one thing, and not having to lug it through a muddy field or up a rocky mountainside is a whole new benefit.  The Solitude 20-60x60 SE kit provides all you need to satisfy your glassing needs all season long.  Operating in temperatures from 0 degrees Fahrenheit up to 120 degrees while remaining fogproof, dustproof, and waterproof, you need not worry about leaving this setup in your blind throughout the season.  While you may not need this in all hunting locales, if you are hunting wide-open terrain and find sneaking up on your game rather difficult, being able to spy from afar is an invaluable capability that enables many to fill their freezers year to year.  Just like other optics in this line, specialized coatings are used to provide an optimal image to the viewer.  Bonus points are earned for this option as it comes with a tripod and cover, allowing you to use this setup directly out of the box.

Incorporating high-quality optics into your gear collection can significantly enhance your success and overall experience in the field. The benefits of using optics, such as improved target identification, increased accuracy, and the ability to hunt in low-light conditions, cannot be overstated. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just getting started, investing in the right optics can elevate your experience, meaning you’re more likely to get back out there season after season.
